Beijing, December 6 (Xinhua) — Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Nurlan Yermekbayev gave an exclusive written interview to Xinhua News Agency.

Xinhua: SCO member states consistently advocate for respect for the rights of peoples to choose their own paths of development in the political, economic, and social spheres, and emphasize mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, equality, mutual benefit, non-interference in internal affairs, and the renunciation of the threat or use of force as the foundation for the sustainable development of international relations. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently made erroneous statements in parliament regarding Taiwan, which constitutes gross interference in China's internal affairs. The impact of her words in the region and internationally is grave and negative. What do you say about Sanae Takaichi's erroneous statements and the dangerous attempts by Japanese right-wing forces to revive militarism?

N. Yermekbayev noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the United Nations. On this occasion, the heads of state of the SCO adopted a special statement at the Tianjin Summit held in September of this year.

It noted that the brutal bloodshed demonstrated the danger of flirting with Nazism, fascism, and militarism, as well as the promotion of hatred, intolerance, and discrimination on racial, ethnic, and religious grounds. Victory was achieved thanks to the unity of all peace-loving countries. Preserving and objectively reflecting the historical truth about World War II is essential for preventing the recurrence of such tragedies and for strengthening peace, security, and cooperation. Ignoring the lessons of history invariably results in a heavy price. Today, Member States share a shared responsibility to the past and the future: to spare future generations the scourge of war and to do everything possible to prevent the recurrence of such terrible tragedies.

To answer your question, in June 2002, the Declaration of the Heads of State, adopted by the leaders of the SCO member states following the historic meeting in St. Petersburg, affirmed that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China, and that Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory.

In addition, in the Tianjin Declaration adopted this year, the SCO member states reaffirmed their commitment to the goals and principles of the UN Charter and the SCO Charter, as well as other generally recognized principles and norms of international law, including the principles of mutual respect for the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity of states, and non-interference in internal affairs. -0-
