BEIRUT, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday said Israeli airstrikes and shootings by unidentified assailants against peacekeepers in the south of the country constitute serious violations of a UN resolution.
Peacekeepers observed a series of Israeli airstrikes in their area of operations in the villages of Mahrouna, Al-Majadil and Barashit on Thursday afternoon as the Lebanese military carried out operations to control unauthorized weapons and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL said in a statement.
"These actions constitute a clear violation of Resolution 1701," the peacekeepers emphasized. They called on the IDF to utilize established communication and coordination mechanisms and warned the Lebanese side against any retaliatory measures that could worsen the situation.
The statement also stated that on Thursday night, six men on three mopeds approached a peacekeeping patrol near the town of Bint Jbeil, and one of them fired three shots into the rear of a UN vehicle. There were no reports of casualties.
UNIFIL called on the Lebanese authorities to ensure the safety of the peacekeepers and to immediately investigate the incident.
