BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) — Authorities, businesses and residents in China's inland areas have joined forces to raise resources to support the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) after a major fire broke out at a residential complex in the region on Wednesday.
Closely monitoring the rescue operations, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee formed a task force that arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday morning to assist with disaster relief efforts.
Under the coordination of the said office, Hong Kong's neighboring province of Guangdong quickly mobilized a range of rescue equipment, medicines and consumables in accordance with the needs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and delivered them to Hong Kong in two batches on Thursday and Friday.
Guangdong Provincial Fire and Rescue Forces also provided support for search and rescue operations and logistical support. At the request of Hong Kong authorities, they provided modern equipment such as lighting drones, reconnaissance drones, exoskeleton robots, and firefighters' protective boots.
Under the leadership of the All-China Women's Federation, several agencies jointly allocated funds totaling 5 million yuan (approximately US$706,324) to support disaster-stricken residents in Hong Kong with emergency rescue, temporary housing, and post-disaster recovery.
The Chinese Red Cross Society donated 2 million yuan to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society for emergency rescue and humanitarian aid and promised to provide follow-up support if needed to address the aftermath of the disaster.
Furthermore, support from businesses in China's interior has increased. To date, total donations from companies and institutions across various sectors, including science and technology, e-commerce, and logistics, have exceeded 600 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 77.12 million US dollars).
Shelters are receiving regular donations of essential supplies, such as blankets, food, and drinking water, from businesses and individuals in China's interior. Many residents in the interior also volunteer to deliver essential supplies, organize fundraisers, and offer online psychological counseling.
In addition to setting up a HK$20 million charitable fund for emergency relief, China Merchants Group, a centrally-directed state-owned enterprise headquartered in Hong Kong, launched an emergency logistics platform to ensure the efficient delivery of donated material resources to the SAR.
Firefighting and search and rescue operations concluded Friday morning after a deadly fire broke out at Hong Kong's Hongfuyuan residential complex on Wednesday afternoon, killing 128 people. -0-
