Moscow, November 27 (Xinhua) – Practical cooperation is the internal driving force behind the stable development of Chinese-Russian relations, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui stated in an interview with TASS, published on the news agency's website on Thursday.
"During two meetings between our leaders this year, bilateral cooperation documents were signed in areas such as biosecurity, investment protection, the digital economy, energy, space, artificial intelligence, agriculture, and healthcare. Together, we are expanding the 'cooperation pie,' strengthening the sustainability of interactions, enhancing mutual understanding and coordination, further enriching the content of bilateral relations, and infusing Chinese-Russian relations with a powerful vitality for their sustainable, progressive development," the ambassador noted.
He assessed the leadership role of heads of state as a crucial political advantage and a fundamental guarantee for maintaining high-level Chinese-Russian relations. He recalled that in 2025, high-level contacts between China and Russia took place "one after another." At the beginning of the year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a video meeting and a telephone conversation, during which they engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual interest. In May, Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Russia and participated in events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War. In September, the Russian president visited China to attend a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
"The joint celebration by the leaders of our countries of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, writing a new chapter in the protection of international justice, guiding the international community in maintaining the post-war international order, and promoting a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations are of enormous historical significance," Zhang Hanhui said, emphasizing that the important agreements reached during the successful mutual visits between the leaders of the two countries are being effectively implemented.
The diplomat noted that in 2025, China and Russia's cooperation in various fields had seen a number of highlights, with bilateral relations reaching new heights. "The two leaders signed the Joint Statement on Further Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Coordination in the New Era, thereby implementing a common design and strategic planning for advancing the development of bilateral relations in the next stage, and bringing stability and positive energy to a turbulent and changing world through the certainty of Sino-Russian relations," he noted.
Zhang Hanhui believes that humanitarian exchanges, in turn, have yielded significant results. He recalled that during the China-Russia Years of Culture, the two sides held over 400 humanitarian exchange events, which, according to the diplomat, further unlocked the potential for cultural cooperation between the two countries. "Broad interest in China and the Chinese language continues to grow in various regions of Russia. The peoples of our countries are deepening mutual understanding through cultural commonality and strengthening friendship through emotional resonance, infusing new life into the generational Sino-Russian friendship and contributing to an even closer rapprochement between the peoples of the two countries," he stated.
The ambassador also noted that strategic cooperation has reached new heights. "As founding countries of the SCO, China and Russia serve as a 'dual engine,' guiding all parties to jointly implement the 'Shanghai Spirit.' The two sides supported each other's efforts to successfully host the SCO summit in Tianjin and the meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council, advancing SCO development to a new level," Zhang Hanhui noted, adding that the two sides jointly expanded and strengthened the "Greater BRICS" format, contributed to greater progress and significant results among BRICS countries, and generated new energy for the unification and self-empowerment of countries in the Global South.
"Taking advantage of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN as an opportunity, China and Russia developed comprehensive strategic coordination, jointly promoted multilateralism, and contributed to the reform and improvement of the global governance system," the Chinese diplomat concluded.
