Washington, November 27 (Xinhua) — Two U.S. National Guard soldiers were injured in a shooting near the White House on Wednesday afternoon. A suspect has been detained, local media reported.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially posted on social media that both National Guard members had died. However, about 20 minutes later, he reported that he was "receiving conflicting reports" about their condition.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel told reporters that the victims were "in critical condition."

US President Donald Trump wrote on social media that both National Guardsmen were seriously wounded and were being treated in two different hospitals. He also said the shooter was seriously injured.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a briefing that the fighters were victims of "targeted shooting."

The incident occurred a few blocks from the White House around 2:15 p.m. local time, authorities said.

Following the attack, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that Donald Trump had asked him to send 500 more National Guard troops to Washington. –0–
