Beijing, November 26 (Xinhua) — China is willing to strengthen the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with Tonga's national development strategy and use the signing of the agreement on enhancing the quality of economic partnership as an opportunity to expand bilateral trade and investment, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced on Wednesday.
The Chinese Prime Minister made the announcement during a meeting with King Tupou VI of Tonga. Li Qiang called for advancing cooperation in areas such as infrastructure construction and industrial production, as well as for properly formulating and implementing development cooperation plans to better serve the modernization of both countries.
The premier said China is willing to import more high-quality agricultural and fishery products from Tonga and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in the country, adding that the two sides should expand exchanges in education, healthcare, regional cooperation, tourism and sports.
According to Li Qiang, China looks forward to strengthening coordination and cooperation with Tonga at multilateral forums to jointly address global challenges such as climate change, actively promote the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, implement the four major global initiatives, and contribute to the development of a more equitable and reasonable global governance system. The Premier also expressed hope that Tonga will continue to play an active role in deepening cooperation between China and the Pacific island countries.
King Tupou VI, in turn, stated that the two countries always firmly support each other in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tonga adheres to the one-China principle and fully supports UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, he emphasized.
The Tongan government attaches great importance to relations with China, the king noted, pointing out that Tonga wishes to deepen practical cooperation with China in areas such as economics, trade, agriculture, fisheries, clean energy, healthcare, disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as to intensify youth, sports and other humanitarian exchanges.
Tupou VI said his country supports the four major global initiatives put forward by the Chinese President and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China in multilateral formats to jointly address common challenges such as climate change, promote new achievements in South-South cooperation, and advance the reform of the global governance system.
