Moscow, November 26 (Xinhua) – Russian-American relations are still in the early stages of normalization, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated at a press conference.
“Our relations with the United States are still in the early stages of the normalization process, and the overall success of this process is not guaranteed,” noted S. Ryabkov.
According to him, Washington's actions in matters of relations with Moscow are contradictory.
"Despite the current US administration's declared support for restoring dialogue with Russia, as well as the course it has seemingly taken to normalize Russian-American relations, its actions—and we judge them by them—are quite contradictory," the diplomat emphasized.
"We still need to be convinced of the US's willingness to truly respect our fundamental interests and work equally to eliminate the root causes of the current crisis in our relations, as well as fundamental contradictions in the security sphere," the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said.
Responding to a question about the prospects of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), Sergei Ryabkov stated that the global security situation will sharply worsen if the United States does not accept Russia's proposal regarding the START restrictions.
"I would like to emphasize once again the timeliness and validity of our initiative in the post-New START area. If the American side, for whatever reason, rejects it and begins to build up its capabilities in this area, the strategic situation will worsen, tensions will increase, and predictability will be sharply reduced or even completely lost," the Russian Foreign Ministry representative emphasized.
