BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) — Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, condemned the brutal attack on two Taiwanese compatriots in Tokyo on Wednesday and called on Japanese authorities to immediately bring the perpetrators to justice.
At a regular departmental press conference, he stated: “We strongly condemn such acts of violence and call on the Japanese side to punish those responsible as quickly and severely as possible.”
Peng Qing'en made these remarks in response to journalists' requests for comment on an incident that occurred in July of this year, in which two Taiwanese men were brutally attacked by five Japanese men on a Tokyo street. Japanese police recently confirmed the arrest of suspects involved in the incident.
There have been several attacks on tourists in Japan this year, including those from Taiwan, Peng Qing'en recalled.
Recently, the Japanese Prime Minister made openly provocative remarks against Taiwan, seriously undermining the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges, Peng Qing'en said, adding that there has been a noticeable increase in extremist actions by right-wing elements in Japan filled with anti-China sentiment, posing serious risks to the safety of travelers. -0-
