NAIROBI, November 26 (Xinhua) — The Chinese Embassy in Kenya and the Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA) on Tuesday donated 11 million Kenyan shillings (about 84.8 million U.S. dollars) to repair and upgrade the infrastructure of MCEDO Beijing School, located in the Mathare slum in Nairobi.

At the ceremony, the Chinese Embassy also awarded annual scholarships to 20 students at the school.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan said the funds would be used to improve learning conditions and help students continue their education in school.

According to her, the development of MCEDO Beijing School has always been a key priority for the Chinese Embassy and Chinese enterprises in Kenya. The ambassador added that the school's history of independence and perseverance serves as a shining example of the friendship and humanitarian ties between China and Kenya.

School Principal Benedict Kiage stated that the donated funds will be used to fund the second phase of renovations, including painting, lighting improvements, roof and floor repairs, and the purchase of new lockers, chairs, fire extinguishers, lab supplies, and desks. He noted that the upgrades will significantly improve the safety of the learning environment.

Collaboration with the Chinese Embassy and Chinese businesses over the past 17 years has transformed the school and expanded opportunities for children in Matara, added B. Kiage. –0–
