Early in the morning, flocks of migratory birds soar above the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve in Hebei Province. In recent days, the solemn spectacle of murmuration has become a fairly common occurrence here.
Zhang Yuguang, deputy head of the Natural Resources Conservation Bureau of Binhu New District in Hengshui City, reported that migratory birds have been arriving here since early autumn this year, including Bewick's swans and spoonbills, which are classified as Category II state protected birds.
As a rare, complete wetland ecosystem on the North China Plain, Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve is known to be a key hub for migratory birds. Currently, 336 bird species have been recorded at Hengshui Lake, including 21 species of first-category state-protected animals.
