SEOUL, November 24 (Xinhua) — President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Jae-myung emphasized the need to establish dialogue with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), declaring the situation on the Korean Peninsula extremely dangerous, the Renhap News Agency reported.
“The peninsula is in a very dangerous situation where accidental clashes could occur at any time,” Lee Jae-myung said during a press conference on November 23 aboard a plane flying from Johannesburg to Ankara as part of his four-nation tour of Africa and the Middle East.
The President emphasized that Seoul must patiently continue its efforts to resume dialogue with the DPRK. He also noted that relations between the two countries have become extremely hostile and confrontational, lacking even basic trust.
According to the South Korean leader, with all communication channels cut off, there is no way to resolve potential conflicts.
When asked whether South Korea might consider scaling down joint military exercises with the United States to encourage dialogue with North Korea, Lee Jae-myung said it would be preferable not to hold the exercises if a lasting peace regime is established between the two Koreas.
