BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) — Responding to a reporter's question about Japan's plan to deploy offensive weapons near China's Taiwan region, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday that the move is extremely dangerous and called on neighboring countries and the international community to remain on high alert.
Mao Ning made the statement at a daily press briefing, saying that Japan's actions were deliberately escalating tensions in the region and provoking a military confrontation.
Given Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous statements about Taiwan, such a development is extremely dangerous and requires increased vigilance from neighboring countries and the international community, the Chinese diplomat emphasized.
As Mao Ning recalled, the Potsdam Declaration established an unambiguous ban on Japan's rearmament, and the country's peace constitution proclaimed the principle of an "exclusively defensive policy."
The official said it was alarming that Japan had significantly revised its security policy in recent years, increasing its defense budget year after year, easing restrictions on arms exports, seeking to develop offensive weapons, and planning to abandon its "three non-nuclear principles."
"At present, right-wing forces in Japan are trying in every way to break the restraining bonds of the peaceful constitution, moving ever further down the path of war and bringing troubles to Japan and the region as a whole," Mao Ning stated.
Recalling that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's liberation from Japanese occupation, Mao Ning stated that China will never allow the far-right forces in Japan to turn back the wheel of history, will not allow external forces to get involved in the Taiwan region, and will not allow Japanese militarism to rise from the ashes.
She stressed that China has the determination and ability to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. –0–
