Chengdu, November 23 (Xinhua) — The population of captive-bred giant pandas in China has nearly doubled over the past decade, reaching a total of 808 individuals, according to Liu Guohong, head of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration.

This growth has effectively supported the sustainable development of the panda population, Liu Guohong noted at the Global Panda Partners 2025 conference in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, southwest China.

The giant panda population has increased significantly from the 422 individuals recorded at the end of 2015.

Liu Guohong attributed the increase to improved scientific research, including the establishment of the National Innovation Alliance for Giant Panda Protection, which pools research resources to study key issues such as genetic diversity.

In addition, efforts to conserve giant pandas also include the application of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the establishment of an integrated space-air-ground monitoring system to track pandas, etc., Liu Guohong added.

China has strengthened protection of giant panda habitats. 73 isolated nature reserves have been merged into the Giant Panda National Park, covering a total area of over 22,000 square kilometers.

The Global Panda Partners 2025 Conference, taking place from November 20th to 22nd, includes a main forum, eight parallel sessions, and other events covering topics such as ecological civilization, panda culture, and cultural tourism.

Sichuan Province, known as the "homeland of the giant panda," has the largest panda habitat in the world and is home to more than 70 percent of China's wild giant panda population. -0-
