JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday called on the Group of 20 (G20) economies to maintain their commitment to unity, firmly uphold free trade and build an open world economy amid a sluggish global economic recovery.
Li Qiang made the announcement during his speech at the first session of the 20th G20 summit, dedicated to inclusive and sustainable economic growth and chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
As the head of the Chinese government recalled, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized at the 17th G20 summit that unity is strength, while disunity leads nowhere.
According to the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, over the years, thanks to the spirit of unity, G20 members, representing different regions and with different systems and cultures, have managed to overcome a number of challenges and promote global progress and development.
Li Qiang emphasized that today the global economy is once again facing serious challenges, expressed in the strengthening of unilateralism and protectionism, the increase of trade restrictions, and the escalation of confrontations.
Diverging interests and shortcomings in global cooperation mechanisms, he continued, have become significant factors hindering the strengthening of international cohesion.
The head of the Chinese government called on the G20 to address these issues head-on, seek solutions, and promote the return of all parties to the path of unity and cooperation.
Li Qiang stated the need for concerted efforts to properly resolve disputes and frictions through consultations on the basis of equality when differences and contradictions arise.
The Premier also emphasized the importance of finding common ground while maintaining differences, actively identifying the highest common denominator that takes into account the interests of all parties, and responding appropriately to each other's legitimate concerns.
Speaking about the challenges of global governance, he stressed that the G20 economies must keep up with the times and take the lead in supporting multilateralism.
The head of the Chinese government noted the importance of accelerating reforms of institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization.
He also called for a stronger voice for developing countries and for building a more equitable and open international trade and economic order.
Li Qiang said that China has published an action plan to implement the G20 initiative to support industrialization in Africa and least developed countries, and emphasized China's commitment to promoting the common development of all countries.
China supports debt relief for developing countries and has jointly launched an initiative with South Africa to cooperate in supporting Africa's modernization, the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China said, noting that China will also establish an Institute for Global Development.
