UN, November 21 (Xinhua) — China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Thursday called for a negotiated settlement to the Ukrainian crisis.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Ukraine, the diplomat noted that the Ukrainian crisis is protracted, and ground combat continues. He added that with winter approaching, people in the conflict zone are being hit twice as hard by military action and severe cold, creating an extremely alarming humanitarian situation.
"China once again calls on the parties to the conflict to exercise restraint, strictly abide by international humanitarian law, and effectively ensure the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure," Fu Cong said. "Dialogue and negotiations are the only viable option for resolving the Ukrainian crisis. We urge the parties to demonstrate political will and embark on a negotiated settlement as soon as possible."
The diplomat also called on the international community to increase humanitarian aid, actively promote peace talks, and continue to create favorable conditions for a political settlement.
Fu Cong reiterated that China's position on the Ukrainian issue remains exceptionally clear and consistent. The Permanent Representative clarified that the Chinese side is actively engaging with all stakeholders, making diligent efforts to promote peace and negotiations. He stated that China is ready to maintain contact with all parties and play a constructive role in achieving an early ceasefire and advancing a political settlement of the crisis.
