CHENGDU, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) — Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on Thursday reaffirmed the Chinese mainland's resolve to combat separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence," resist external interference, and safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Wang Huning, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC Central Committee), made the remarks in a congratulatory letter sent to a seminar on cross-strait compatriot exchanges held in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.
He stressed that the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the return of Taiwan to China are a great triumph and a source of deep national pride for the Chinese nation.
They highlight a fundamental truth: a strong and unified state is always the foundation on which the future of all Chinese people, including compatriots in Taiwan, ultimately depends, Wang Huning noted.
He also noted that at the ceremonial meeting held in September to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, it was solemnly proclaimed that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation cannot be stopped.
He added that at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee in October, further emphasis was placed on promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the great cause of national reunification in the new campaign of comprehensively building a socialist modern country.
"We will fully implement the Party's overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan issue in the new era, uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 consensus," Wang Huning said, vowing to make efforts to promote cross-strait economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, improve the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, and work hand in hand to create a brighter future for the Chinese nation.
The seminar, the fifth of its kind, was jointly organized by the mainland China-based Center for Cross-Strait Relations Studies and Taiwanese patriotic groups supporting national reunification.
The event was attended by more than 200 people, including former Kuomintang Party Chairman Hong Xiuzhu, New Party Chairman Wu Chengdian, experts and scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as guests from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
