Gaza/Jerusalem, November 20 (Xinhua) — At least 25 Palestinians were killed on Wednesday in a series of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, the enclave's Civil Defense reported. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes were in retaliation for recent shelling of its troops in southern Gaza.
Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bazal told Xinhua that 11 people were killed in an airstrike on a building in the Zeitoun neighborhood in southern Gaza City. Dozens of displaced families were sheltering in the building, and women and children were among the victims.
At least two people were killed and 10 others wounded in two separate strikes near the Al-Shuja'iyah junction in eastern Gaza City. At least 12 people, including two children, were killed in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, according to M. Bazal. He said the death toll could rise.
Gaza residents and local sources report that the airstrikes have caused panic, particularly in Zeitoun and Shuja'iya, forcing some families to flee to central Gaza City. The situation remains tense as Israeli airstrikes and artillery continue to shell.
Israel said it launched airstrikes in response to gunfire targeting its forces in the southern Gaza Strip earlier on Wednesday. Militants opened fire near Israeli forces in Khan Yunis. No Israeli soldiers were injured.
"In response, the IDF began targeting Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip," the military said, adding that it would continue operations to "eliminate any immediate threat."
Wednesday marked one of the deadliest days for Gaza residents since the ceasefire took effect. According to the enclave's medical authorities, at least 280 Palestinians have been killed and more than 670 injured by Israeli fire since the fragile ceasefire began. Nearly 70,000 people have died since the conflict began in 2023.
