Tbilisi, November 19 (Xinhua) — The European Union is using all possible tools to blackmail Georgian society and impose certain punitive measures against it, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili told the Georgian television channel Imedi on Tuesday during a visit to Israel.
M. Bochorishvili expressed hope that Brussels will not make decisions aimed at punishing the Georgian people.
"They are discussing changes to the visa regime for Georgia and constantly raise this issue, although there is no reason to intimidate Georgian society with a possible suspension of the visa-free regime," the minister emphasized.
On November 17, the EU Council approved new rules for suspending visa-free travel for third-country nationals. Using this updated mechanism, Brussels will be able to respond more quickly and decisively to cases of abuse of the visa-free travel regime or violations of EU interests.
The suspension of visa-free travel can now last up to 12 months, with a possible extension of 24 months. Unlike previous rules, the additional suspension period will not apply to the entire population; instead, the EU will be able to continue to apply the relevant measures to officials and diplomats.
