Lanzhou, November 13 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Science and Technology recently officially approved the construction of two joint laboratories as part of the Belt and Road Initiative between Gansu Province in northwest China and Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, respectively. The two laboratories will aim to promote exchanges and cooperation between Gansu Province and Central Asian countries in science and technology.

According to the Gansu Provincial Administration of Science and Technology, the China-Kyrgyzstan Joint Laboratory for the Protection of Cultural Heritage along the Belt and Road will be jointly built by the Dunhuang Research Academy and relevant institutions in Kyrgyzstan. The laboratory will focus on four areas: interpreting the cultural heritage values of the Silk Road, research and development in key heritage protection technologies, implementing demonstration projects, and promoting exchanges and mutual learning between different civilizations. The joint laboratory will focus on the protection of cave temples and earthen architecture, as well as the protection, restoration, display, and use of important heritage sites, such as the ruins of the ancient settlement of Ak-Beshim (Suyab).

The Belt and Road China-Kazakhstan Joint Laboratory for Ecological Restoration of Grasslands will be co-constructed by Lanzhou University and the S. Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University. It will focus on three key areas: innovation in the use of grass germplasm resources, ecological restoration of pastures and meadows, and intelligent grassland management.

In the future, Dunhuang Research Academy and Lanzhou University will quickly formulate special construction plans and focus on promoting the construction of joint laboratories to contribute to the high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.
