Chengdu, November 13 (Xinhua) — China's traction battery production continued to grow in the first nine months of this year. Amid the rapid global adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), sales of batteries for them increased 48.9 percent year-on-year to 786 gigawatt-hours (GWh) during the reporting period. This was announced at the opening ceremony of the Global Conference on Traction Battery Development, which was held on Wednesday in Yibin, Sichuan Province, southwest China.

According to published data, exports of these products from China in the first three quarters of this year exceeded 129 GWh, which is 32.7 percent more than a year earlier.

China is steadily strengthening its leading position in the traction battery sector. According to a report published by the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China, six Chinese companies were included in the list of the world's top 10 traction battery manufacturers in 2024. These six companies collectively account for 67.1% of the global battery market.

The 2025 Global Traction Battery Conference brought together experts and representatives from more than 100 Chinese and foreign companies, including China's CATL, BYD, and France's Dassault Systèmes.

The first such conference was held in 2022 in Yibin, China's leading traction battery production base. According to event organizers, Yibin accounts for approximately 16 percent of the country's total traction battery production. Over the past three years, more than 600 new product lines have been launched there, and 249 major projects have been completed, with a total investment of nearly 300 billion yuan (approximately $42.4 billion).
