WASHINGTON, November 12 (Xinhua) — The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, has arrived in the Caribbean, the U.S. Navy announced on Tuesday. This has fueled speculation that Washington intends to take action against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as part of what the Donald Trump administration calls a campaign against narco-terrorism.

Including the Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group, the number of US military forces in the Caribbean currently exceeds 15,000—the highest in several decades.

"These forces will enhance existing capabilities to interdict drug trafficking and disrupt and destroy transnational criminal organizations," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell was quoted as saying in a statement from the US Navy.

The first-of-its-class aircraft carrier, which carries more than 4,000 sailors and dozens of tactical aircraft, can simultaneously launch and receive aircraft day and night to support missions.

Since September 2, the U.S. military has sunk 19 ships suspected of carrying drugs in international waters in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, killing at least 76 people on board.

N. Maduro has repeatedly condemned Washington's actions as attempts to overthrow his government and expand U.S. military influence in Latin America. Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the U.S. administration of killing people at sea.
