BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) — The growing strength of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy), marked by the advent of the "three-carrier era," will enable the country to more effectively safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday.
As he emphasized at a regular press conference, the commissioning of aircraft carriers—from the Liaoning and Shandong warships to the Fujian—that is, the advent of the "three-carrier era"—represents significant achievements for the country in building national defense and the armed forces, as well as solid steps toward transforming the people's army into a world-class armed force.
This enhanced capability will serve to “protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity and suppress any forces or designs that encroach on China’s sacred territory or seek to divide it,” Chen Binhua noted.
Chen Binhua made this comment at the request of journalists regarding the recent official commissioning of the aircraft carrier Fujian, China's first aircraft carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults.
The commissioning of this aircraft carrier, which caused a significant stir in Taiwan, was described in a number of media reports as a demonstration of significant successes for mainland China both in building up new productive forces and in strengthening its defensive power.
