SÃO PAULO, November 11 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the tornado that struck the southern Brazilian state of Paraná last Friday has risen to seven, following the death of a 70-year-old man, the state's Health Ministry reported on Tuesday.
Among the victims of the disaster, six died in the city of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, and another in the neighboring municipality of Guarapuava.
At least three tornadoes of unprecedented strength were recorded in the region, one of which devastated Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, a city of about 14,000 people, where approximately 90 percent of buildings were damaged.
According to health authorities, 20 people remain hospitalized. The state government continues to provide medical assistance in the affected areas.
The fire service said there were no reports of missing people, adding that efforts were currently focused on restoring basic services such as water and electricity, as well as ensuring the distribution of food and drinking water. -0-
