Quito, November 10 (Xinhua) — Ecuador's National Prison Affairs Service (SNAI) confirmed on November 9 that 27 more inmates died from asphyxiation during a prison riot in the coastal province of El Oro in the south of the country. This brings the death toll to 31.
According to initial official reports, riots broke out in the early hours of that day in a prison in Machala, the provincial capital. The incident left four inmates dead and many others, including a police officer, injured.
Local media reported that the riot was triggered by a “reorganization” and the transfer of prisoners to a maximum-security prison.
Machala is considered one of the most crime-ridden cities in Ecuador.
On November 5, President Daniel Noboa declared a new 60-day state of emergency in five coastal provinces and three municipalities in the central provinces of Cotopaxi and Bolívar to quell “serious internal unrest” caused by escalating violence by organized crime groups. –0–
