SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and three others were missing on Sunday after a Chinese fishing boat capsized in waters off Gageo Island, about 420 km southwest of South Korea's capital Seoul.
According to the Coast Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at around 6:50 a.m. local time, a report was received that the 98-ton vessel had capsized in international waters, approximately 81 km from the island.
The Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju confirmed the report to Xinhua.
Of the 11 crew members on board the ill-fated vessel, six were rescued by another Chinese fishing vessel sailing in nearby waters. Those rescued were unharmed.
Coast Guard personnel arrived at the scene and rescued two more sailors, but they died of cardiac arrest. The remaining three remain missing.
The Coast Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a vessel from the Chinese Coast Guard, conducted search operations to find missing people in the area of the incident.
