Tashkent, November 6 (Xinhua) — Former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled al-Anani has been elected Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Uzbek media reported on Thursday.
On October 30, the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference opened in Samarkand.
H. Al-Anani's candidacy was considered at the plenary session held on Thursday. Following a vote by Member States, he was officially elected as UNESCO Director-General and will assume his post in mid-November.
Following his election, H. Al-Anani outlined his vision for a new chapter in UNESCO's history, calling for action to strengthen peace, unity and hope in service to all peoples.
H. al-Anani currently holds the position of Professor of Egyptology at Helwan University in Egypt, where he has been working for over 30 years. –0–
