HEFEI, November 6 (Xinhua) — China's first double-deck cable-stayed suspension bridge opened to traffic on Thursday in Tongling, east China's Anhui Province. It is the third bridge across the Yangtze River in Tongling and the 11th on the Anhui section of China's largest river.
The new bridge is a multi-purpose road-rail bridge, integrating road, intercity passenger, and rail freight services. The project is also designed to support multimodal transportation using rail and water transport. The 11.9-kilometer-long road section of the bridge has already been commissioned.
This third bridge in Tongling is expected to further strengthen the integrated transportation network in the Yangtze River Delta region, giving new impetus to regional economic development.
The bridge was designed and built to extremely high environmental standards, taking into account that it crosses a national freshwater dolphin nature reserve and a sanitary protection zone for water sources. -0-
