UN, November 4 (Xinhua) — Violence has intensified in Sudan's North Darfur state after the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) captured its capital, El Fasher, according to UN humanitarian officials.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), several airstrikes and drone strikes were recorded in the El Fasher, Tina and Mount Wana areas on Sunday.

Local sources reported civilian casualties, but OCHA said it could not confirm these reports due to limited access and difficulties in communicating with people in the affected areas.

On Monday, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned ongoing attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan following the attack on the Kernoi Paediatric and Maternity Hospital in North Darfur, which left at least four people dead and three injured. He said such attacks on healthcare facilities must stop everywhere.

Despite dangerous working conditions, the UN and its partners continue to provide vital assistance wherever possible, OCHA said.

The agency added that the international organization and its partners are expanding therapeutic nutrition and vitamin supplementation programs. At the same time, efforts to ensure safe childbirth and emergency care for pregnant women through mobile clinics are continuing.

The security situation in Sudan's Kordofan region is also deteriorating, OCHA reported. Local sources reported that at least 40 civilians were killed and dozens wounded on Monday in an attack on a funeral ceremony in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan.

“OCHA reiterates its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and calls on all parties to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law,” the agency said. –0–
