New Delhi, November 1 (Xinhua) — At least ten people were killed and several injured on Saturday in a stampede at a Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, local officials said.
The incident occurred at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam district, located 548 kilometers northeast of Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh. A large crowd had gathered there to celebrate Ekadashi, an auspicious day in Hinduism.
"The large influx of worshippers led to overcrowding, resulting in many being injured and immediately taken to nearby hospitals," the official said. "We are receiving reports that ten people have died so far, and many more have been injured," he added.
Police fear the death toll could rise.
