GUANGZHOU, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) — Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, capital of southern China's Guangdong Province, officially opened its third terminal and fifth runway on Thursday, making it China's first civilian airport with five commercial runways.

The expansion of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, one of the country's three major international aviation hubs, marks a new step toward building a world-class airport cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In the near future, this airport's annual passenger traffic could reach 120 million person-times and cargo throughput 3.8 million tonnes. With a designed terminal capacity of 140 million passengers and 6 million tonnes of cargo, this airport could become one of the world's busiest airports by both metrics.

The expansion project took five years to complete and cost 53.77 billion yuan (approximately $7.6 billion). The project also includes an integrated transportation hub designed to improve connectivity between air, rail, and road transport.

According to the plan, Baiyun Airport will be connected to six high-speed rail lines, five intercity railways, two subway lines, and two expressways, allowing passengers to reach other major airports in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area within an hour.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan, released in February 2019, calls for the construction of a world-class airport cluster.

The Greater Bay Area's aviation infrastructure includes three hub airports (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong), two major airports (Zhuhai and Macao), and two regional airports (Huizhou and Foshan), which collectively serve more than 200 destinations worldwide. In 2024, their combined passenger traffic exceeded 200 million person-times.
