GYEONGJU, South Korea, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday called for actively promoting multilateral cooperation within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) framework amid a backdrop of protectionism and inward-looking policies fueling global economic uncertainty.
With protectionism and policies focused on national interests once again gaining momentum, talk of cooperation, shared growth, and inclusive development may sound unconvincing, Lee Jae-myung said at the opening ceremony of the APEC Business Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.
“Paradoxically, APEC’s role as a platform for solidarity will be highlighted even more clearly in times of crisis like these,” he said.
As the APEC Chair in 2025, Kazakhstan intends to lead the way in multilateral cooperation to address crises, the President stated, emphasizing the need to strengthen supply chain cooperation and restore trust in the Asia-Pacific region.
Lee Je-myung called for closer cooperation on innovation, especially in artificial intelligence, and promised to strengthen support for the younger generation in the region.
