Tokyo, October 28 (Xinhua) — Tetsuya Yamagami, who shot and killed former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022, pleaded guilty during the first hearing of his murder trial, local media reported.
A 45-year-old man is accused of killing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with a homemade firearm during the former prime minister's campaign speech in western Japan. T. Yamagami confessed to the murder and violation of the Firearms and Swords Control Act during a hearing at the Nara District Court, Kyodo News reported.
T. Yamagami, who appeared in court for the first time since the murder three years ago, said he committed the crime out of resentment against the Unification Church sect, with which Shinzo Abe and other Japanese politicians allegedly had close ties.
According to T. Yamagami, his mother donated about 100 million Japanese yen (about 660 thousand US dollars) to this sect, which led to financial ruin in the family, the report says.
The shocking murder has drawn intense attention to the ties between the Unification Church and members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which Abe previously led. –0–
