Moscow, April 1 (Xinhua) — Russia has launched driverless trucks on the M-12 "Vostok" highway, which connects St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kazan via a single transport corridor. The Kremlin press service announced this on Tuesday.
"A good example of such innovation is driverless transport, which has already proven its cost-effectiveness. Driverless vehicles have traveled 13 million kilometers on roads without incident," Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at the opening ceremony of the transport infrastructure facilities via videoconference.
Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin spoke about the potential economic benefits of using driverless trucks, adding that during a test drive, an autonomous truck covered the distance between Kazan and St. Petersburg (1,600 km) in 24 hours, while a truck with a driver took 58 hours to complete the same journey.
Previously, driverless trucks were launched on the M-11 (Moscow-St. Petersburg) highway and the Central Ring Road (the ring road in the Moscow region).
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev emphasized that the pilot project to launch driverless trucks began in 2023. He stated that over the past three years, the fleet of driverless trucks has increased from three to 95 vehicles.
“We expect that the technological solutions being developed with businesses and the regulatory framework being created by the government will allow us to increase the number of driverless trucks on the roads to four thousand by 2030,” noted V. Savelyev. –0–
