Moscow, March 31 (Xinhua) — Two people were killed and 72 others were injured in an explosion at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim chemical plant in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan. The press service of Sibur, the Russian petrochemical company that owns the plant, reported Tuesday.
"According to updated information, two people died as a result of the incident at Nizhnekamskneftekhim. Eight people were hospitalized. The remaining 64 who sought medical attention suffered minor injuries, such as cuts from broken glass and bruises, and were treated at the scene," according to a statement published on the company's website.
It is noted that more than 150 personnel from the Russian Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies, and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (MES) and 54 units of specialized equipment are involved in extinguishing the fire.
Specialists from accredited laboratories are monitoring air quality. "No threats to residents or the environment have been identified. The monitoring results will be published on the company's website and official social media," the statement stated.
The press service of the Tatarstan Republic Prosecutor's Office stated that an investigation has been launched into the fire. "The Nizhnekamsk City Prosecutor's Office, together with relevant experts, will determine the causes and circumstances of the incident and provide a legal assessment of compliance with safety requirements," the agency noted.
Nizhnekamskneftekhim is one of Sibur's largest production sites for synthetic rubbers and plastics in Russia. The company is among the world's leading producers of petrochemical products.
