BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) — The number of people in China who have registered as voluntary organ donors has reached more than 7.33 million, data released Sunday by the China Organ Donation Administration Center showed.
To date, more than 65,000 cases of posthumous organ donation, more than 69,000 cases of posthumous whole-body donation, and more than 120,000 donor cornea transplants have been performed across the country.
Transplant surgeries have saved the lives of more than 200,000 people suffering from organ failure and have helped restore vision to more than 100,000 people with ophthalmological diseases.
More than 380 memorial sites have been erected across China in honor of organ donors. Every year during Qingming Festival (All Souls' Day), commemorative events are held across the country to raise awareness of this life-saving initiative and encourage greater participation.
In 2010, China launched pilot programs for posthumous organ donation and expanded them nationwide in 2013.
