NEW YORK, March 28 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Saturday that a task force of 3,500 U.S. Marines and Navy personnel arrived in the Middle East on March 27.
"U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) arrived in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility on March 27," CENTCOM briefly reported on social media.
As CENTCOM said in a statement, the America-class amphibious assault ship is the flagship of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit's combat-ready amphibious group Tripoli, which includes approximately 3,500 sailors and Marines, as well as transport and strike fighter aircraft, airborne assault and tactical assets.
On March 26, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East to give US President Donald Trump more military options beyond diplomacy.
