BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed support for the interim arrangements announced on Saturday to implement the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on E-Commerce.
In his written statement, Wang Wentao emphasized that the WTO Agreement on Electronic Commerce establishes global rules for digital trade, which will effectively promote more inclusive and sustainable digital growth.
The minister noted that China supports the timely implementation of the agreement and hopes that in the future the WTO will play a more active role in shaping digital trade rules.
On Saturday, the co-hosts of the WTO e-commerce talks – Australia, Japan and Singapore – issued a joint statement in the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé announcing the achievement of interim arrangements for an Electronic Commerce Agreement.
At the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé on Saturday, 66 members of the organization, including China, indicated that the interim arrangements would pave the way for the entry into force of the document, while ensuring that work on its incorporation into the WTO legal framework continues.
The Electronic Commerce Agreement, a major milestone for the WTO in recent years, will enter into force for those members that have accepted it once 45 of them have deposited their instruments of acceptance, according to a joint statement.
