Boao, Hainan Province, March 27 (Xinhua) — Participants in the Boao Forum for Asia (BAF) 2026 annual meeting noted that the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP) is a key platform for China's high-level opening-up, emphasizing its growing role amid rising global uncertainty and changing trade patterns.
The annual BAF-2026 meeting is taking place from March 24 to 27 under the theme "Shaping a Common Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation." The event is attended by approximately 2,000 participants from government agencies, international organizations, and the business community.
According to Sohail Khan, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Hainan Free Trade Port is a developing free trade port that offers wide opportunities for trade in goods and services.
“This is an attractive location for countries in the region, especially ASEAN countries and SCO countries,” said Sohail Khan.
"China is a technology leader," said Jack Perry, Chairman of the UK's Group of 48 and Executive Chairman of LEC Robotics. He noted that this will stimulate both the export of advanced equipment and demand for resources, making the creation of effective trade structures even more important.
He emphasized that free trade zones play a key role in facilitating such changes. "I believe Hainan will become a leader in this area," he said.
More than three months ago, the Hainan Free Trade Port, the world's largest by area, launched a regime of independent customs operations covering the entire island. Under this policy, the number of duty-free goods within the Hainan Free Trade Port has reached approximately 6,600, accounting for 74 percent of the total number of tariff lines.
Jack Perry expressed optimism about Hainan Island's prospects and emphasized its advantages for international cooperation. He also highlighted specific policy measures aimed at supporting business growth, including those promoting the development of value-added manufacturing and supply chain integration.
Holger Bingmann, vice chairman of the executive board of the International Chamber of Commerce, said his visit to Hainan provided new insights into China's high-level commitment to opening up.
Having visited the island earlier, H. Bingmann noted that Hainan is entering a new stage of development after the launch of an independent customs operation regime throughout the island.
“I am absolutely convinced that this will play a decisive role,” said H. Bingmann, adding that Hainan combines efficient logistics, favorable trade conditions and a favorable business environment.
According to him, the openness to dialogue and friendliness of local residents increase the island's attractiveness for international business.
H. Bingmann also stressed the importance of raising awareness worldwide about the opportunities that Hainan offers.
“The main thing is to convey information about what Hainan offers in terms of logistics and trade opportunities,” he said, calling for closer cooperation between Chinese and international companies. -0-
