TOKYO, March 26 (Xinhua) — Japanese public figures have criticized the government's response to a Self-Defense Forces member's intrusion into the Chinese Embassy compound earlier this week.

Yuri Kono, a professor at Japan's Hosei University, called the incident "an unforgivable and serious mistake." He believes the Japan Self-Defense Forces bear inevitable responsibility, as its active-duty officer threatened the security of a foreign embassy.

"From the perspective of international principles and the practical need to prevent further escalation, the Japanese government must take prompt measures to resolve this issue and bring those responsible to justice," Kono added.

Hiroshi Shiratori, also a professor at Hosei University, stated that this incident is unacceptable under international law. He warned that if this issue is resolved merely with expressions of "regret," Japan will have difficulty demanding a full apology if its own diplomatic personnel encounter similar incidents in the future.

Historian Masahiro Yamazaki also criticized the government's handling of the case and called the incident "serious."

"Shouldn't Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, as Commander-in-Chief of the Self-Defense Forces, provide an explanation?" the historian wonders. "Will this matter be resolved simply by Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara's statement that the incident is 'regrettable'?"

He added that how the Japanese government handles this issue could significantly impact the development of Japanese-Chinese relations and therefore deserves serious attention.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Japan, a man who identified himself as an "active member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces" climbed over a fence and entered the embassy grounds on Tuesday morning, where he threatened to kill Chinese diplomats.

The embassy sent a serious message to the Japanese side and expressed a strong protest, demanding a responsible explanation of what happened.
