BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) — State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian on Wednesday condemned Taiwan Chief Executive Lai Qingde for his recent remarks justifying and praising Japan's colonial rule over Taiwan. She called such statements a "betrayal of the nation."
Lai Qingde recently defended the infamous concept of the so-called “Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere” put forward by militaristic Japan during World War II to gloss over and justify its aggression and colonial crimes throughout Asia.
The statements sparked outrage on the island, with experts and scholars condemning him for distorting history to suit political parties and personal interests, and for hushing up Japanese massacres and other colonial atrocities in Taiwan.
In response to a question from journalists, Zhu Fenglian noted that justifying Japan's war crimes is a distortion of history and a desecration of the memory of those who fought and sacrificed their lives in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and once again exposes Lai Qingde's true intentions to achieve "Taiwan independence."
Calling Japan's invasion and colonial rule in Taiwan "the darkest chapter in the island's history," Zhu Fenglian said that during this period, the Japanese invaders brutally suppressed the local population and plundered Taiwan's resources, causing deep suffering on the island and provoking strong resistance from local residents.
“We will resolutely not allow anyone to justify or revise the verdict regarding colonial crimes, nor will we allow any external forces to interfere in the Taiwan issue,” she emphasized.
Zhu Fenglian called on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to unite in the fight against secessionist activities aimed at "Taiwan independence" and external interference. -0-
