Tokyo, March 25 (Xinhua) — Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which suffered an accident, discharged 55,011 tons of radioactively contaminated wastewater into the ocean in fiscal year 2025, according to a press release from power company TEPCO published on Tuesday.
According to the agency, the plant conducted seven waste discharge cycles during fiscal year 2025 (from April 2025 to March 2026). The wastewater released into the ocean contained approximately 16 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium.
In fiscal year 2026, the company plans to carry out eight discharge stages, with a projected total volume of approximately 62,400 tonnes.
Despite widespread international concerns and objections, Japan unilaterally began dumping radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean in August 2023. To date, 18 discharges have been completed, totaling approximately 141,000 tons.
