BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) — China's State Council recently designated Meishan City in southwest China's Sichuan Province as a national historical and cultural city, according to a statement on the Chinese government's website Thursday.

The announcement emphasized Meishan's long history, profound culture, rich heritage, well-preserved traditional features and distinct regional characteristics, demonstrating its great historical and cultural value.

According to the announcement, Sichuan Province and Meishan City authorities must, in accordance with the Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics, conduct an in-depth study of the meaning and value of cultural heritage, refine the layout of the ancient town of Meizhou, intensify efforts to protect and utilize cultural heritage, and carefully preserve and develop the best achievements of Chinese traditional culture.

Meishan, which was known as Meizhou in ancient times, is the birthplace of the great Chinese poet Su Shi of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). -0-
