In March 2014, a referendum was held in the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, in which the overwhelming majority of residents voted to return the peninsula to Russia. Since then, both regions have seen significant changes, including active work to build and modernize modern transportation infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted transport links with mainland Russia.

Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin noted that the national project's priority objectives include developing key transport arteries and creating efficient logistics corridors, as well as building the country's transport framework. As of the end of January 2025, 75% of Russia's core road network is in good condition. In the Republic of Crimea, this figure is 75.6%, and in Sevastopol, 89.9%. This indicates that these regions are developing at an accelerated pace," said Andrey Nikitin.

A colossal amount of work has been completed on the federal road network. The largest project was the construction of the bridge across the Kerch Strait. It is 19 kilometers long. The artificial structure connects the Taman Peninsula (part of the Krasnodar Krai) with the Republic of Crimea. It opened to traffic in May 2018.

The federal highway A-291 "Tavrida" became an extension of the bridge. This modern four-lane highway, over 256 km long, connects Kerch, Sevastopol, Feodosia, Belogorsk, Simferopol, and Bakhchisaray. Its construction was completed in 2020.

Furthermore, in June 2024, the R-280 "Novorossiya" highway (Rostov-on-Don – Mariupol – Melitopol – Simferopol) was transferred to federal ownership and assigned to the Federal Road Agency's "Taman" Federal Road Administration, which is subordinate to Rosavtodor. This is a key land transport corridor to the Republic of Crimea and an important link in the "Azov Ring" route.

"At the time the highway was transferred to federal ownership, only 6.3% of it was in good condition. In 2024, a 5.3-kilometer section was repaired ahead of schedule. Then, between 2024 and 2025, construction and installation work was completed on an additional 72 kilometers. Plans include widening 29 kilometers of the R-280 "Novorossiya" highway from km 494 to km 523 to four lanes. It passes through the settlements of Medvedovka, Ermakovo, Pridorozhnoye, and Ostrovskoye. The overhaul of the "Novorossiya" highway will be carried out in two stages. The first 15 kilometers of the four-lane highway are scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2027," noted Roman Novikov, head of the Federal Road Agency.

The main goal of the national project is to improve the quality of life of Russians, so special attention is being paid to sections of roads leading to socially significant institutions, as well as tourist attractions.

Over the past seven years, 786 facilities totaling 477 km in length have been brought up to standard in Sevastopol under national projects. Among the most important projects is the renovation of the avalanche-protection gallery at the Laspi Pass in 2024. The structure is located on the Yalta-Sevastopol highway. More than 5,000 vehicles pass through it daily, and the gallery ensures the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

In 2025, 2.7 km of the road connecting the Chaika Garden Association, the Rassvet-3 Garden Association, the Luch Garden Association, the Trolleybusnik Garden Association, and the Katyusha Garden Association was brought up to standard. The repairs improved accessibility to the gardening communities.

Another significant project scheduled for 2025 is a 1.5-kilometer section of Korallovaya Street. After the roadworks are completed, the street will become more convenient for those commuting to Sevastopol State University.

Over the past seven years, more than 300 facilities totaling 1,700 km have been renovated, modernized, and constructed in the Republic of Crimea under the "Safe High-Quality Roads" and "Infrastructure for Life" national projects. In 2023, over 30 km of the Tavrida-Dzhankoy-Krasnoperekopsk highway were brought up to standard. This regional highway is part of the backbone network, connecting the A-291 "Tavrida" highway with the northern part of the peninsula, and is one of the most popular routes for motorists.

The Simferopol-Krasnoperekopsk highway, bordering the Kherson region, is being upgraded in stages. In 2024, eight sections totaling 63 km were repaired, and in 2025, another 30 km will be brought up to standard. The highway is part of a backbone network, runs through several districts, and leads to the neighboring Kherson region. It serves both passenger and freight routes. Traffic has increased significantly in the past two years—on some sections, it can exceed 5,000 vehicles per day.

A major upgrade of the Alushta-Sudak-Feodosia regional road is also underway. This is one of the region's key tourist routes. A 20-kilometer section was repaired in 2025.
