YANGON, March 18 (Xinhua) — U Aung Lin Dwe of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) was elected as the new speaker of the Nationalities Assembly (upper house) of Myanmar at a parliamentary session held in Naypyitaw on Wednesday, Myanmar State Television and Radio Broadcasting (MRTV) reported.

According to official results released by the Union Election Commission, the USDP won a majority of seats in the Union Assembly in the general elections earlier this year.

The Assembly of the Union of Myanmar consists of two chambers, with a total of 664 seats: 440 in the Assembly of People's Representatives (lower house) and 224 in the Assembly of Nationalities. –0–
