Since the beginning of the year, the Traffic Management Center (TsODD) has installed and upgraded traffic lights at 26 locations. Work was carried out in the Sokolniki, Tverskoy, Solntsevo, Altufevsky, Yuzhnoye Medvedkovo, and other districts.
"Since the beginning of the year, the Moscow Traffic Management Center has installed and modernized traffic lights at 26 locations in almost all districts of Moscow. Priority was given to areas where accidents occurred, as well as routes to social facilities such as schools, kindergartens, and clinics. Furthermore, specialists are taking into account residents' requests, such as installing a button on the traffic light or creating an additional section for turning. We continue to improve comfort and safety for all road users, as instructed by Sergei Sobyanin, as part of
transport development strategy until 2030", said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.
Before deciding to install a traffic light, the Traffic Management Center staff analyzes the traffic situation, paying attention to pedestrian and driver safety, traffic volume, and updating outdated traffic patterns when opening new highways. If the road is wide (four or more lanes), has nearby bus stops, residential buildings, and public facilities, and the traffic flow is heavy, an uncontrolled crossing is converted to a controlled crossing.
Using this principle, new traffic lights were installed at several addresses in the northeast of the capital since the beginning of the year. The work was carried out near buildings 7, building 2, and 9 on Bibirevskaya Street, where two pedestrian crossings are located. Traffic in this area is heavy, and local residents had to wait a long time to cross the street safely, so specialists from the Traffic Management Center installed traffic lights there. This made the journey to bus stops and homes not only more convenient but also safer.
New traffic lights have also been installed near Building 9, Block 3, Shokalskogo Drive, near Building 20, Letchika Babushkina Street, and near Building 4, Block 1, Maryina Roshcha Drive 17. The key principle applies everywhere: where a wide road meets dense traffic and pedestrian traffic, traffic should be as safe and regulated as possible. The traffic lights at Shokalskogo Drive and Maryina Roshcha Drive 15 will become operational after all preparatory work is completed.
Traffic lights will be installed at the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing near building 19 on Bogdanova Street. This road has four lanes of heavy traffic, so this solution will make the crossing safer. Traffic lights at this section will be operational after markings are applied and road signs are installed.
Installing new equipment is only part of the work of the Traffic Management Center staff. They also regularly update existing traffic lights, in part based on resident requests. Where crossings need to be made more convenient, they add pedestrian buttons and sections for turning or U-turning. For example, by upgrading the traffic lights this year, specialists improved traffic at the complex intersection of Preobrazhensky Val, Krasnobogatyrskaya, and Cherkizovskaya Streets. There, they carried out a scheduled replacement of the additional section for right turns—it now uses a red circular outline. When the red signal lights up, the section illuminates along the outline, making it more visible from a distance. This allows drivers to slow down in advance and prepare to stop. This targeted upgrade makes the intersection safer for all road users.
Additionally, this year, work was carried out to replace older models. Modern traffic lights were installed on Sokolnicheskaya Square and Rusakovskaya Street, in the area of 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street, and adjacent streets (Vasilyevskaya, Chayanova, and 2nd Tverskaya-Yamskaya). These devices are more visually appealing and last longer, making the city's infrastructure more reliable.
All traffic lights installed in Moscow today are modern LEDs. They emit a vibrant color that doesn't fade over time, making the signal visible from a distance and even in bright sunlight. Furthermore, these traffic lights remain visible in all weather conditions, consume less energy, and last longer than their predecessors. Many models are integrated into the Smart Intersection system and automatically transmit data to the Traffic Management Center's Situation Center. And starting in 2025, the traffic lights will also be visible in drivers' navigation apps.
In addition to installing traffic lights at new locations and updating existing ones, the Traffic Management Center (TMC) specialists are adjusting their operating modes to ensure pedestrians spend less time waiting for green lights and vehicles move through intersections more quickly. Since the beginning of 2026, such adjustments have been made more than 300 times. The TMC's situation center monitors the situation around the clock, and experts perform up to 90 percent of traffic mode adjustments remotely, allowing them to quickly respond to changing traffic conditions.
In total, traffic lights are planned to be installed and upgraded at 250 locations across all districts of the capital by 2026. Particular attention will be paid to roads near social and medical facilities and areas prone to accidents.
The number of smart traffic lights in Moscow will increase, according to Sergei Sobyanin.Specialists from the Moscow Traffic Management Center have configured sound modules for 22,000 traffic lights in Moscow.Traffic lights on 14 Moscow highways will be synchronized for comfortable travel at night.
