BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhua) — A total of 841,000 fires were reported in China in 2025, down 7.6 percent from 2024, the State Fire and Rescue Administration said on Tuesday.
The number of fatalities and injuries decreased by 9.5 percent and 19.6 percent, respectively, while direct material damage increased by 1.8 percent compared to 2024 and amounted to 8.53 billion yuan (about 1.24 billion US dollars), Wang Wei, an official representative of the aforementioned department, said at a press conference.
During the same period, a total of 25.93 million fire department and 4.699 million fire engine calls were recorded. "More than half of these calls were related to firefighting and rescue operations," she added.
Statistics for the past three years show that fires in residential buildings account for almost 30% of all fires annually and almost 80% of fires in buildings and structures. A significant proportion of these fires are caused by faulty electrical equipment and careless fire handling.
The agency is calling for more widespread use of early fire detection and alarm systems in homes, especially for older people living alone and children left without parental supervision. -0-
