JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) — The Israeli military announced Monday that it destroyed a plane used by Iran's top leadership at Tehran's Mehrabad Airport. They said the strike would disrupt coordination between Tehran and its regional allies.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the aircraft was used by senior political and military officials for domestic and international travel. It noted that the destruction of the aircraft would disrupt contacts between Iranian leadership and allied groups in the region, slow Tehran's military buildup, and limit its ability to restore lost capabilities.

The plane was identified as an Airbus A340, previously used to transport high-ranking leaders, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, to diplomatic meetings abroad. Iranian authorities have not yet confirmed the strike.

Also on Monday, the army reported strikes on targets in the Iranian cities of Tehran, Shiraz, and Tabriz. The US-Israeli campaign against Iran is now in its 17th day. –0–
