In March, the Crisis Center for Assistance to Women and Children Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the City of Moscow is celebrating its 12th anniversary. It is the only state institution in the capital that provides a full range of support to women experiencing domestic violence. For example, they can receive temporary shelter, psychological and legal assistance, and social rehabilitation services.
Twelve years is not only a time to take stock, but also a reminder that the capital offers a safe and secure place where every woman can find professional support in a difficult life situation. Our goal is to be more than just an emergency response, but a navigator in a new life. We provide a safe space where you can stop, take a breath, and, with the support of specialists, begin to build a future. Psychologists help you process trauma, and lawyers help you restore violated rights. A range of services—from crisis therapy to employment assistance—allows you to completely restart your life and regain confidence and independence. Natalia Zavyalova, Director of the Crisis Center for Women and Children
Over the years of work crisis center has become a flagship expert platform, whose specialists are changing not only the lives of individuals but also attitudes toward domestic violence among city residents. Its model is unique: it unites the efforts of social services, law enforcement, the healthcare system, and charitable organizations to provide comprehensive and prompt support to every woman.
Over the years, nearly 3,200 people have found here not just temporary shelter, but a path to a complete life restart. Much attention is paid to restoring psychological and physical health after trauma. Art therapy, physical therapy, Pilates, and therapeutic exercise are used for this purpose.
Working with the Cause: The "What Men Keep Silent About" Program
The center's unique approach addresses not only the consequences but also the causes of violence. Since its opening, it has been implementing the "What Men Don't Tell You" program, which aims to correct aggressive behavior and teach constructive communication skills.
According to Natalia Zavyalova, addressing the aftermath doesn't change the overall situation. She believes violence is a symptom of a deep internal crisis and an inability to cope with emotions, stress, and constructively resolve conflicts. By helping men recognize the problem and learn to manage themselves, specialists prevent further trauma and offer a chance to preserve their families. Over the years, the program has seen more than a thousand men take an important step: they recognized their need for help and contacted the center.
Prevention and Education: From Social Actions to Transfiguration
Moscow's social campaigns and projects are helping to change public perceptions of domestic violence by promoting the values of respectful relationships. The initiatives of the Women's and Children's Crisis Center have become symbols of solidarity and support, with hundreds of city residents participating.
"Our annual 'Don't Be Silent!' run is more than just a sporting event. It's a powerful message: 'You're not alone, we're with you.' Over the past four years, it has united nearly a thousand Muscovites who support open conversations about the issue and value healthy relationships," added Natalia Zavyalova.
One of the most popular projects is "Transformation." It gives women who have experienced domestic violence a chance for inner transformation. Under the guidance of stylists, makeup artists, and photographers, participants regain their confidence: image-based work helps them see in the mirror not as victims, but as strong, beautiful, and independent women.
