Plumbers have become some of the most sought-after and highly paid specialists in the capital's labor market. Their work largely ensures comfortable living in any modern city. On International Plumber's Day, celebrated on March 11, we'll tell you where to obtain this profession quickly and how to successfully find employment.
"Moscow is rightfully considered the best city for studying and working: residents can master a new profession from scratch at any age, and the quality of specialist training meets the highest employer standards. Particular attention is paid to training personnel for blue-collar jobs, which today form the backbone of the capital's economy. Highly qualified plumbers ensure the smooth operation of utility systems in residential buildings, offices, and industrial facilities, without which a modern city cannot function. The demand for these specialists is confirmed by the figures: the aggregated database of the "Professions of the Future" center contains nearly 5,500 vacancies in the housing and utilities sector. Income levels reflect the high demand for qualified personnel: the average salary for plumbers reaches 170,000 rubles. Moreover, over the past five years, salaries for these specialists have increased by 64 percent," said Andrey Tarasov, head of the Moscow employment service and the "Professions of the Future" practical training center.
In collaboration with the best employers
At the Practical Training Center Professions of the Future Pechatniki has created all the necessary conditions for training qualified personnel. A "Plumbing" workshop has been opened there, where experienced mentors train future specialists. Its space recreates the conditions of a plumbing workshop: it features work areas for assembling, soldering, and testing utility systems, professional tools, and stands with pipes of various diameters. The equipment allows for a full cycle of work—from designing the layout to installing pipelines and instruments. Simulated fault simulations are used to teach students how to diagnose leaks, clear blockages, regulate pump pressure, and adjust boiler settings.
The Plumber training program is available to everyone, regardless of age, education, or work experience. Beginners can master the profession in just six weeks, while existing professionals can advance their ranks in a two-week course.
Specialists are trained in close collaboration with leading Moscow employers. This allows graduates to solve real-world problems that they may encounter in their professional lives even during their studies. Partners of the "Professions of the Future" center include PAO MOEK, GBU Zhilishchnik, Krost Concern, and other companies willing to provide graduates with jobs and opportunities for professional growth.
How to master a new profession
Among the center's students is 42-year-old Alexander Lokhmachev. He came here in search of his calling and chose the plumbing course.
"I worked as a chef for over 20 years, but eventually I burned out: I got bored and lost interest. I decided I needed a change and chose a completely new direction—I enrolled in a plumbing apprenticeship at the 'Professions of the Future' center. Special thanks to my instructor, Tatyana Shevchenko: she's a true professional and very supportive. I'm already looking for job openings so I can find a job immediately after graduation. And in the future, I plan to return to the center and advance my qualifications. I want to continue growing in this profession," Alexander said.
47-year-old Anna Vinokurova worked in IT for almost 20 years. However, with the development of neural networks, she began to wonder if digital professions might become less in demand, while manual dexterity jobs would remain relevant. Moreover, Anna Vinokurova has always enjoyed seeing quick and visible results of her work. She learned about the "Professions of the Future" center from a friend studying to be a chef there, and decided to try her hand at becoming a plumber. She admits that during her training, she sometimes completes assignments even faster than men. She has four sons, and she explains to them that it's never too late to learn a new profession.
In addition, one of the key professions in the housing and utilities sector – plumber – can be mastered at the training center "Professional"Here, training is also based on real-world challenges that industry professionals face daily. Students master the full work cycle—from reading technical documentation and selecting materials to installing, repairing, and maintaining utility systems. During training, they practice typical and non-standard situations, including repairing leaks, servicing utility systems, and working with modern plumbing equipment and components. Upon completion of their training, graduates find employment with management companies, housing and utility companies, and city construction and service organizations.
As Sergei Sobyanin noted in the strategy for the development of Moscow's social protection system until 2030, the city offers Muscovites and residents of other regions the opportunity to develop their own human resources potential and successfully integrate into the capital's labor market. To this end, Moscow is creating a modern educational infrastructure for a wide range of educational programs. It is designed for both adults and children. This work will continue.
The development of a system of vocational training and retraining of residents is one of the key objectives of the national project Personnel, initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The project aims to train qualified specialists for all sectors of the economy, so that every citizen of the country can obtain a sought-after profession and build a successful career.
