BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) — China remains highly vigilant and firmly opposes Japan's attempts to achieve a breakthrough on the Taiwan issue, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.

He made this statement at a regular departmental press conference, responding to a question about the recent visit to Japan by Taiwan's top executive, Zhuo Rongtai. The Chinese diplomat stated that Zhuo Rongtai had engaged in provocative tactics in Japan aimed at achieving "Taiwan independence" and that his actions were utterly contemptible.

Japan will pay a heavy price for its indulgence in provocations and reckless actions, and responsibility for all the ensuing consequences must be borne by the Japanese side, Guo Jiakun concluded. -0-
